Programs and Services
LTPB peer teams provide proven programs and services to promote smoking cessation and abstinence. Campus health professionals are also involved in offering smoking cessation support and services.
LTPB resources to support smoking reduction, cessation and abstinence include:
Smoke | Quit (Fumer|Arrêter)

- 2-booklet, self-help smoking cessation program
- Developed by two university students under the guidance of a researcher and health professional
- Smoke (Fumer) offers a tongue-in-cheek view of smoking and targets post-secondary smokers with no immediate plans to reduce or quit smoking
- Quit (Arrêter) helps smokers re-assess reasons to quit and build confidence about quitting; it offers a day-by-day quit plan and ways to avoid relapse
- Evidence of effectiveness is available

- For students who want to help a smoker quit
- Developed by a university student with input of peers, health professionals and researchers
- Suggests how to be supportive without being over-bearing, and offers ways to stay positive even if the smoker experiences setbacks
- Preliminary evaluation is promising
Assess your Stress

- Fun, "biofeedback" card to support quitting
- Developed by a student nurse and her mentor
- Reminds recent quitters to manage stress through exercise and relaxation

- Highly-interactive, web-based smoking cessation program based on Smoke|Quit

Annual Contest
The wouldurather... contest challenges students to quit or reduce smoking, and stay smoke free with the help of a "buddy", peer-to-peer support, motivational support emails and prizes. The annual motivational contest has four reduction/cessation/abstinence categories, students can choose from:- Quit For Good! for daily smokers
- contestants in this category pledge to be completely smoke-free for 8 weeks - Keep The Count! for daily smokers
- contestants agree to halve their tobacco consumption for 4 weeks - Party Without the Smoke! for all smokers, but especially social smokers
- contestants agree to abstain from smoking when drinking for 4 weeks - Stay Smoke Free! for non-smokers and ex-smokers

LTPB services to support smoking reduction, cessation and abstinence include:
Campus Clinic Toolkits

- Materials exclusively for campus professionals
- Developed in consultation with campus doctors, nurses and healthcare providers
- Includes: posters urging clients/patients to ask about quitting; waiting room brochures & display stands; pocket cards & notepads for professionals' use & examination room 'quit kits' for dissemination to clients/patients
Referrals to Campus Health Professionals
- Most LTPB peer teams are supervised by a campus health professional
- This structure helps ensure good communication with on-campus health services, and facilitates referrals from LTPB to health and medical professionals
CO Monitoring

- Free service available at twice-weekly displays hosted by LTPB peer teams across campus
- High-quality, calibrated CO monitors are used
- Instructions to student help ensure valid results
- Tactful feedback about results always provided
- Individuals can access service as often as desired
Peer-to-peer support
- Members of LTPB's peer teams offer face-to-face, email and telephone support
- Email support is provided proactively to all students using LTPB programs
- Phone support is extended to individuals who request it
- Face-to-face support is always available by visiting twice-weekly LTPB displays (times and locations are available on Campus pages of this website)
Tobacco Control Policies
LTPB provides administrators with background materials to inform the development of progressive tobacco control policies on campus. LTPB also supports administrators through the entire process of designing and fully implementing these policies.
